Nearly every living thing in this world needs water. We believe water is the source of life and the grace of nature for which we should be thankful. On average, a person can only go without water for three days, depending on the environment as the person’s body loses a significant amount of water by sweating, breathing, and excreting. Animals worldwide have had millions of years to adapt to hostile environments in arid areas. Particular adaptations for desert animals allow them to survive extreme heat. Their bodies can store water and absorb it naturally when required.
There have been a few animals that can survive without drinking water for years. It sounds strange and unlikely, but the animals like this do exist as discussed below:
Kangaroo Rat
North America’s kangaroo rat is one of the most specialized desert animals living in desert environments and can go without drinking water for the whole of their lives. The small rodent gets its name from long hind legs (similar to the Australian kangaroo) that allow it to jump long distances as they are searching for water and food. By eating only high-carbohydrate foods such as grains, these small mammals can survive. The body of the mouse is adapted in such a way so to save water. They go their whole lives without drinking water (3-5 years).
Camel
Camel is a prevalent desert animal in the world and is known as a “desert vehicle” because when crossing the vastness of the desert, he can bear a very heavy burden. The camel is also well known as one of the wild, barren and dry animals that can survive, and has very little water supply. They’ll go without drinking water for up to 3 weeks. They’re also good at drinking water, and they can drink 100 liters of water in just 10 minutes.
Giraffes
Giraffes can go a more extended time without drinking water than a camel. Giraffes get the majority of their intake of water from plant sources. Acacia leaves are a significant source of plant food for giraffes. They only drink water every couple of days. Their bodies have no water-storage resources. But their plant diet is plentiful and provides a large portion of their water intake.
The Galapagos Tortoise
Tortoises are one of the animals known as animals that move very slowly. To survive in extreme environments in the archipelago of Galapagos, this gigantic tortoise has proved to live without food and water for up to one year. These tortoise foods are usually several cactus types, some barren fruit types, grasses, leaves, and some propagating plant types.
Winding up
All these animals, technically, need water to survive; they just go for a very long time without drinking water. Unlike them, it should be consumed every day by humans and above mentioned are some animals that can survive without drinking water.
